It is a pleasure to have Christy Johnson as our speaker. Christy comes to us from AMOCA, The American Museum of
Ceramic Art which is located in Pomona she is Director & Curator. Christy will be speaking about the post-World War II Los
Angeles art scene.
The J. Paul Getty Foundation is sponsoring over 30 cultural institutions to launch an unprecedented series of concurrent
exhibitions at museums throughout Southern California. These exhibitions will be highlighting the post-World War II Los
Angeles art scene; they will begin in 2011 as part of the initiative Pacific Standard Time.
The exhibitions and the events that will accompany them as part of PST will demonstrate the pivotal role played by Southern
California in national and international artistic movements since the middle of the twentieth century. The American Museum
of Ceramic Art is among the first 15 institutions that received research and planning grants for exhibitions beginning in fall
2011. AMOCA is researching and planning for an exhibition of post-WWII Los Angeles area ceramics entitled, Common
Ground: Ceramics in Southern California 1945-1975.

Carol completed her first wire sculpture
for an assignment in a high school art
class. She has refined her technique
and created a style which is entirely her
own. Her inspiration comes from nature
and her art materials from the hardware
store. She transforms common
materials into unique works of art.
The sculptures are created by wrapping
a framework of 19-gauge steel wire (the
diameter of a pencil lead) with 32-gauge
wire (the diameter of a thread). Multiple
layers of paints and glazes are applied
with an airbrush to complete the
sculpture. A butterfly sculpture, though
weighing only 2 ½ ounces, requires over
500 hours of labor and incorporates
100 feet of wire.
Carol is a past President & long-time
Treasurer of the Whittier Art Association
and Gallery.
JUDGE: ERNEST LACY
Ernest Lacy, Judge for this "Wings" exhibit at the
Gallery was the featured artist at the last Hillcrest Art
Festival in February, 2010. At his first retrospective in
2009 at the Lev Moross Gallery they stated that Ernest
was "... a prolific and multi-talented septuagenarian
master colorist, visual organizer and painter of nature
in the Cezanne tradition, whose stunningly varied and
consistently accomplished body of work conveys an
equal measure of fluency with oils, acrylics,
watercolors, and pastels. " .... a satisfying adventure
that traces the full developmental trajectory of an
important voice in 20th century American art."
